Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you bring your chicks home, you’ll need to gather all necessary supplies for your brooder. Here’s what you’ll need:

Step 2: Set Up the Brooder

  1. Choose a Location: Find a warm, draft-free area in your home to set up the brooder, away from direct sunlight.
  2. Prepare the Container: If using a cardboard box, ensure it is clean and free of any sharp objects. Cut out ventilation holes if necessary.
  3. Add Bedding: Spread about an inch of bedding material on the bottom of the brooder to absorb waste and provide comfort.
  4. Install the Heat Source: Position the heat lamp or heat plate at one end of the brooder. The temperature at the warm end should be around 95°F (35°C) for the first week, decreasing by 5°F (3°C) each week until they are fully feathered.
  5. Set Up the Feeder and Waterer: Place the feeder and waterer at the cooler end of the brooder to encourage the chicks to move around.
  6. Check Temperature: Place a thermometer in the brooder or use an infrared thermometer to monitor the temperature.

Step 3: Adjust Temperature and Environment

Step 4: Bring Chicks Home

  1. Pick Up Your Chicks: When picking up your chicks, handle them gently. Place them in a secure container for transportation.
  2. Transport Safely: Ensure the transportation container provides ventilation and is not too hot or cold. Avoid letting the chicks be exposed to drafts.
  3. Introduce Chicks to the Brooder: Once you arrive home, carefully place the chicks into the brooder.
  4. Show Them the Food and Water: Gently dip their beaks in the water and show them the feed to ensure they know where to find their resources.

Step 5: Care for Your Chicks
